In the continuance of our High Achieving Students initiative, let us introduce you to
Mohamad Khairul Ikhwan Zulkarnain: 4th year Bachelor of Engineering (Chemicals)(Honours) at the University of Adelaide.
Here’s his story:
//
• What are few of your proudest achievements?
K: Being the first Malay to represent South Australia Frisbee Men Club (Outbreak Adelaide) in Sydney Melbourne Open (SMO) tournament in Epping Victoria and representing University of Adelaide in Southern UNiGames in Geelong Victoria.
//
• Reflecting on those achievements, can you emphasise on them and explain what/how much they mean to you?
K: My biggest achievement is being the first member in big family to pursue my study oversea which is in The University of Adelaide. This means that all my effort since I was in primary school paid off and bring me to where I am right now.
My second biggest achievement is being able to represent South Australia club (Outbreak Adelaide) in Sydney Melbourne Open Tournament.
Being able to represent the club is not an easy job and it needs all the hard work and commitment towards that sport and somehow I already proved to myself that i can achieve something if I want to achieve it.
Also, i have proven that even an ordinary Malaysian guy can success in one of the famous sports in Australia!
//
• What are some of the struggles you have faced in your 'journey' towards these achievements?
K: Firstly, I’ve had lack of confidence which discouraged me from proving that I can do it. This is one of my biggest struggle that until now it still bothering me.
Whenever I go to the big tournament, I hardly performed as I thought that i couldnt beat those guys because they are far beyond my level.
That type of mentality that I have should be changed and Im still trying to enhance my self-confidence.
//
• What is one piece of advice you would give to other Malaysian students who have their sights set on lofty goals and achieving big things?
K: For me, always think that if other people can do it so does yourself and don’t be shy to try something new because sometimes in that new things we can success more than other people.
